Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis and Multiple Sclerosis: More Evidence Suggesting a Link

Objectives Previous reports of the concurrence multiple sclerosis (MS) and amyotrophic lateral (ALS) in same patients suggest shared pathogenesis, with C9orf72 mutation as a possible genetic link.
 Methods: Symptoms, neuroimaging, laboratory data were summarized for ALS MS within our registry. Using age adjusted prevalence rates, we calculated expected co-occurrence using binomial test. 
 Results: Clinical demographic features five (four female, one male) are described. Because more frequently occurs men, observing 4/5 female concurrent ALS/MS showed borderline expectation difference (P=0.073). The observed was 5X times higher than frequency 0.98 (P <0.004). Four found negative C9orf72.
 Discussion: Our results non-random association between ALS, although etiology not found.
